What is Reiki?

Reiki is a Japanese healing technique for stress reduction, relaxation, meditation, and energy balancing. This powerful technique is a complementary modality that supports and promotes healing. The word Reiki (pronounced Ray-Key) is made of two Japanese words: rei meaning “universal” and ki meaning the vital life force energy that flows through all that lives. Reiki can be administered hands-on, hands-off, and even from a distance (Distance Reiki).

What can I expect in a Reiki session?

Reiki sessions begin with us discussing guidelines and setting intensions. I will ask if you are okay with hands-on treatment or if you prefer hands-off. Of course, you may change your preference at any time during the session.

We will then begin the treatment which will include breathwork, meditation, a full Reiki body scan, and Chakra (energy center) balancing. Aromatherapy and Sound Healing are often used during a session, but you can decide what you would like before we start.

After the treatment, we will spend 10-15 minutes integrating the experience and grounding.

After a Reiki session

Reiki sessions can be very relaxing, and they can also be quite deep. Your body may be in a state of flux as it integrates what came up during the session. Remember, Reiki moves energy. The effects of Reiki may last up to three (3) days after the session. Listen to your body and support it appropriately. Some suggestions:

Immediately after the session:

Drink plenty of water
Follow your body’s lead – you may feel energized or you may feel tired
After 24 hours, take a hot salt bath if possible. A hot shower using sea salt scrubs works, too!

Three (3) days after the session:

Keep drinking water – stay hydrated!
Eat meals that nourish your body.
Rest and ground.
Notice any physical sensations or feelings that come up. Write them down in a journal to see patterns and save any insights.
Spend time with nature – whether that means walking in a park or sitting with your favorite houseplant.

Reactions to Reiki

When I first experienced Reiki for myself, it was a very deep, emotional ride. I remember leaving feeling simultaneously heavy…and light. I felt like I had cried my soul out, and the Reiki practitioner had shared insights that both resonated with and confused me. I was curious what this practice would bring.

It took four months for me to realize how intensely life-changing that single session had been. I remember standing at my kitchen sink, washing dishes while gazing out the window when the realization that something I had struggled with my whole life had not surfaced in those four months. I was dumbfounded. I knew in my gut and my spirit that it had been the Reiki energy.

Healing Catharsis

If you are new to energy work, you may experience some physical symptoms that feel uncomfortable, such as headache, fatigue, and even nausea. Sometimes, you may even sense intense pain in a blocked area before it releases. These experiences are called Healing Reactions or a Healing Catharsis and usually indicated that changes are indeed happening and will go away after a few hours or days. Be compassionate and kind to yourself – rest, hydrate, and keep listening to your body.

The more energy work you receive or practice, the less these symptoms tend to appear. That said, consult with your doctor(s) about any concerns you may have about your physical or mental wellbeing. 🙏🏼
